Abdul Hamid Akhund, Secretary, Endowment Fund Trust for Preservation of the Heritage of Sindh, HadiAkberali, COO, Amreli Steels Ltd., and Dr. ZeryabSetna, Medical Superintendent, Lady Dufferin Hospital, Karachi signed a Memorandum of Agreement on March 8, 2021 for Restoration and Rehabilitation of Historic EduljiDinshaw Building for protecting its historical and aesthetic characteristics and to ensure its longevity and continued historic/ new use.

The EduljiDinshaw Building, located at Lady Dufferin Hospital, Chand Bibi Street (Princess Street), Karachi, showcases the history of establishment of hospitals exclusively for women and children in Karachi. Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, gave birth to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari – the present Chairman PPP, in the hospital in 1988.

The EduljiDinshaw Building, built in 1894-1898, is associated with Seth EduljiDinshaw – a renowned Parsi philanthropist of per-partition Karachi, who contributed towards its construction as a charitable women hospital with a capacity of 192 beds.

EduljiDinshaw Building has undergone incompatible additions, alterations and renovation works in the past which have brought about its decline and it is now in the state of deterioration and underuse.

The project, involving managing of damp, restoration of building envelop and restoration and rehabilitation of building interiors, is estimated to cost Rs.35.141 million and it will take two and a half year to complete.

Amreli Steels and EFT shall meet the project cost in the ratio of 70:30.

Amreli Steels (Established in 1973), the largest supplier of M.S. bars to the country’s construction industry, is participating in the project under its CSR program to give back to the city of Karachi and stay true to its brand tag line “Building for Life”.
