Ameer Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman of Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi has expressed his reservations to Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan on the worst load shedding and other issues of K Electric in Karachi. He requested the Chief Justice not to hold a one-sided briefing on the affairs of K-Electric and also to hear the views of Jamaat-e-Islami and the citizens of Karachi. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister in the government team has been the Chairman of Power Division Tabish Gohar’s Electric and is still the facilitator of K- Electric instead being spokesman for the people of Karachi.
It was during Tabish Gohar’s tenure that the Abraaj Group provided election funding to PTI, which is why as soon as he took over as Special Assistant, he opposed giving power distribution licenses to companies other than K-Electric.
The government has put pressure on him by writing a letter. Electric is responsible for all their efforts to sell KK Electric to Shanghai Electric by giving clean chit without repaying billions of rupees owed to Karachi consumers and state-owned enterprises. Abraaj Group should be made to flee the country. He requested the Justice to conduct a 15-year forensic audit of K Electric, ensure payment of billions of rupees due to the citizens of Karachi and end the monopoly of K Electric and give license to other companies to supply electricity.
He said that the people of Karachi had reacted to the decisions and remarks of the Supreme Court during the Supreme Court’s suo motu notice and other cases on the deaths of a large number of citizens due to the worst load shedding and negligence of Electric during rains in Karachi. I breathed a sigh of relief. But instead of providing relief to the people of Karachi, the govt is subsidizing K Electric up to Rs 97b annually from the national exchequer and has been favoring K Electric.
