The UN Secretary General’s Spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said that over 17,000 people and more than 110 villages were affected by the earthquake in Herat.
He said that international staff is in the area to assess their needs.
“They are trying to assess quickly what is needed, to see what they can bring, what they may already have in country. What may need to be brought from abroad? Our humanitarian appeals for Afghanistan — like there are a mass majority of places are underfunded — but we are trying to help as many people as quickly as we can,” Dujarric said.
According to Dujarric, at least 140 people were injured in the latest earthquake.
Dennis Francis, president of the United Nations General Assembly, in a press conference stressed the need for increased humanitarian assistance to the earthquake-affected people.
Meanwhile, the Turkish Embassy in Kabul wrote in a statement that a Turkish Air Force cargo plane carrying a Turkish search and rescue team, a field hospital, doctors, and other medical equipment landed in Herat on October 9th.
Two Turkish doctors of medicine joined the medical team at Herat Regional Hospital, and up to now, TİKA has distributed 2000 parcels of food.
According to a statement, the Directorate for Disaster and Emergency Management of Türkiye (AFAD) handed over tents (250 pc), blankets (1500), and medical equipment to the local authorities.
The statement said that a second Turkish Air Force cargo plane, this time carrying mostly humanitarian aid items, landed in Herat on October 10.
This comes as the acting Minister of Refugees and Repatriation, Khalil Rahman Haqqani, called for urgent assistance to be provided for the vulnerable people.
The US, Pakistan, Singapore, Australia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and China have pledged to provide assistance to the people affected by the earthquake.
