ANKARA – World leaders have welcomed the US-Iran peace agreement, calling it a major diplomatic breakthrough, and lauded the role played by Pakistan to facilitate the negotiations.
Officials from both sides announced that they had agreed on a framework to immediate end to their war, halt the US blockade of Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed on Friday (June 19) in Switzerland.
Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has welcomed the US-Iran peace agreement.
“I view the agreement reached between the United States and Iran as an important development for establishing peace and tranquility in our region, and I welcome it with satisfaction,” he wrote on X.
“I sincerely hope that this news, which the entire world has long needed, will pave the way for the establishment of a lasting environment of peace and security in our region.
“I emphatically underscore the need to avoid rhetoric, provocations, and actions that could escalate tensions in the period leading up to the signing of the agreement, and to remain vigilant against possible sabotage.
“I extend my thanks to Pakistan for its exceptional mediation efforts, particularly to the leaderships of the United States and Iran, in achieving this outcome.”

UN Secretary General António Guterres also welcomed the US-Iran peace deal, describing it as a critical step towards the peaceful settlement of the conflict.
“I warmly congratulate the US & Iran for having reached a peace deal that provides for an immediate & permanent ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as a framework for further negotiations. This represents a critical step towards the peaceful settlement of the conflict.”
“My deep appreciation goes to Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and other regional countries, for the constructive role played in supporting the negotiations that led to the peace deal”, he wrote on X.

Australian PM Anthony Albanese wrote, “The Australian Government welcomes the agreement by the United States and Iran. Australia has long called for de-escalation and an end to the conflict, including in Lebanon. As we have said, the longer this war goes on, the greater the impact will be.
Continued restraint and constructive engagement will be essential to prevent further escalation and secure a lasting agreement.”

British PM Keir Starmer wrote: “I warmly welcome today’s agreement reached between the United States and Iran. This is a hugely important step forward in ending the war, ensuring regional stability and re-opening the Strait of Hormuz”.
“I congratulate President Trump and the mediators from Pakistan, Qatar and elsewhere who have contributed to this breakthrough. We have long urged de-escalation, and this is the progress we had hoped to see,” he added.
