The theme of this year’s World Cleanup Day, make room for life, underscores the pressing global challenge of waste and marine debris.
With over 80% of ocean pollution originating from land-based sources, an estimated 10 million metric tons of plastic waste flow into the oceans each year, endangering marine life and introducing harmful microplastics into the food chain. Syed Fakhar Ahmed, Jazz’s Chief Corporate & Regulatory Affairs Officer, highlighted the company’s dedication to the cause, stating, “Jazz’s commitment to environmental sustainability drives us to actively combat marine pollution.
By raising awareness about the impact of solid waste on ecosystems, we aim to foster environmental stewardship and ensure a healthier planet for future generations.”
As part of its broader sustainability efforts, Jazz is working towards becoming a net-zero carbon emitter by 2050 through its net zero program. Over the past two years, the company has diverted 77 tons of waste from landfills, promoted recycling, and converted food waste into organic fertilizers.
