ISLAMABAD – Instant messaging app WhatsApp now lets you see contact photos even if they haven’t uploaded a profile picture.
Meta owned app is rolling out game-changing feature that automatically fills blank profile pictures with photos from your address book. The feature, currently in beta for iOS builds on WhatsApp’s previous addition from beta 25.21.10.74, which allowed users to import their profile photo from Facebook or Instagram.
With this new rollout, WhatsApp is doubling down on making conversations more personal by letting your device show saved images of contacts when no official profile picture exists.
For your own profile, If you haven’t uploaded a photo, WhatsApp will display the image saved in your contact card, but only for you. Everyone else will still see the default placeholder unless they have your photo saved.
For others’ privacy-restricted profiles: If someone has blocked their profile photo from being visible due to privacy settings, WhatsApp will instead show the photo saved in your address book. This ensures you can still recognize your friends, even if privacy restrictions hide their official picture.
Contacts who don’t set a profile picture will no longer appear faceless in chats or group conversations. If someone later adds a WhatsApp profile photo and allows visibility, that image will automatically replace the address book photo, keeping your chat experience up to date.
Currently, only beta testers using the latest iOS update can explore this feature via TestFlight, though some App Store users may also gain early access as WhatsApp gathers wider feedback. This move makes WhatsApp chats far more visually engaging, and personal, without requiring everyone to upload a profile photo.
