LAHORE – The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed former Test cricketer Wahab Riaz as consultant to the national women’s cricket team, marking another step in its ongoing efforts to strengthen women’s cricket in the country.
According to sources within the PCB, Wahab Riaz had been informally associated with the women’s cricket department for the past few weeks and was actively contributing to performance assessments and planning sessions. His formal appointment as consultant now makes him responsible for overseeing key aspects of team strategy, player development, and performance evaluation.
Wahab will temporarily supervise the affairs of the Pakistan women’s team and work closely with the Director of Women’s Cricket to design future training programmes, selection policies, and talent development initiatives. His experience as a senior international cricketer, who represented Pakistan across all formats, is expected to bring valuable insight and professionalism to the women’s setup.
Sources also confirmed that the PCB is planning structural changes in the women’s team’s support staff. Former Test cricketer Imran Farhat is reportedly being considered for inclusion in the coaching panel as part of these reforms aimed at improving technical guidance and team management.
An official announcement regarding the appointment of the new head coach and complete support staff is expected soon. The post of women’s team head coach has remained vacant since the expiry of Muhammad Wasim’s tenure earlier this year.
Wahab Riaz had earlier served as interim provincial minister during the last interim setup in Punjab, and he closely worked with the then interim Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who is now interior minister and PCB chairman. Wahab earlier had also served as chief selector of the national men’s selection.
Wahab Riaz, known for his aggressive fast bowling and leadership experience, has also served the PCB in various administrative and advisory roles. His inclusion in the women’s cricket structure reflects the board’s intent to benefit from his cricketing expertise and strategic understanding as Pakistan aims to enhance its performance in upcoming international assignments.
Wahab Riaz likely to receive NOC to play in World Championship of Legends
