Iron dome’s failure

Israel, despite its much-vaunted Iron Dome and technological superiority, is facing challenges on multiple fronts and has been unable to secure a decisive victory for over a year. Israel’s army has been unable to break the resolve of the Axis of Resistance. Israel, heavily backed by its powerful ally, the United States, receives extensive support, including a record $17.9 billion in aid last year. The U.S. is also sending the advanced THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defence) missile defence system, along with 100 American troops to operate it. This system provides an additional layer of protection for Israel’s citizens and military installations.

However, Iran’s hypersonic missiles have demonstrated the ability to penetrate Israel’s beefed-up defence systems. In a recent tit-for-tat exchange, around 200 Iranian missiles reportedly bypassed Israel’s Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow systems, targeting Israeli air bases with ease. Iran has significantly advanced its security capabilities and now possesses the means to deal with external threats effectively.

Breakthrough

The fate of the constitutional amendment is still looming. The coalition government is doing its utmost to secure Maulana Fazal Rehman’s endorsement. Without his support, it will be difficult to pass the 26th constitutional amendment. The government is a few votes short in both the National Assembly and the Senate to reach the required numbers—’224′ in the National Assembly and ‘64’ in the Senate. Now, the ball is in the court of the deft Maulana Fazal Rehman. His support could determine success for either side.

On Tuesday, Maulana Fazal Rehman, the chief of JUI-F, met with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the chairman of PPP, to develop a mutual consensus on the proposed constitutional amendment draft. In his draft, Maulana favors the formation of a constitutional bench in the Supreme Court instead of establishing a separate Federal Constitutional Court. During a press conference, Maulana Fazal Rehman showed some flexibility, and the PPP agreed on certain points.

Yesterday, Maulana Fazal Rehman also met with Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the PML-N, to discuss the proposed draft. The PML-N also showed some willingness to on Maulana’s version of the amendment. However, Maulana has yet to declare his support for either side. Instead, he and his party have created their own draft, which is somewhat acceptable to the opposition.

The government is eager to pass the amendment before October 25th, but it seems difficult without Maulana’s backing. If the amendment is passed, there are concerns that it could compromise the independence of the judiciary.

Infection control

Infection control measures are critical for safeguarding public health, but their implementation in Pakistan faces multiple challenges. One of the primary obstacles is the lack of awareness among healthcare professionals and the general population. Many hospitals and clinics, particularly in rural areas, are under-resourced, leading to inadequate sanitation practices, which in turn, increase the risk of infection transmission.

Pakistan’s healthcare system also suffers from insufficient funding and misallocation of resources. Many public hospitals lack essential infection control supplies like personal protective equipment (PPE), disinfectants and proper waste disposal systems. The lack of trained healthcare workers exacerbates the situation, as many frontline staff is ill-equipped to follow standard infection prevention protocols. Additionally, the country’s densely populated cities contribute to the rapid spread of infections. Limited public health infrastructure and overcrowded healthcare facilities make it challenging to isolate and manage infectious cases effectively. This is especially true during outbreaks like COVID-19, where poor quarantine measures and lack of public compliance hinder efforts to contain the virus.

Another significant barrier is cultural resistance to infection control practices. Public reluctance to adopt practices such as hand hygiene, mask-wearing and vaccination is common due to misinformation and distrust in health authorities. Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach, involving increased government investment, public awareness campaigns and enhanced training for healthcare workers to improve Pakistan’s infection control capacity.
