Fair & impartial justice
THE Karsaz accident starkly illustrates the troubling reality of power dynamics in our society. This incident serves as yet another reminder of how individuals with wealth and influence can manipulate circumstances to bend the rules to their advantage. It is disheartening to witness a settlement being reached with the victim’s family based on blood money, yet this is not an isolated case. Similar precedents have often demonstrated that back-channel negotiations and pressure can silence the voices of victims in the pursuit of justice.
In this specific case, charges of reckless driving and driving under the influence are paramount, and the State must step in as the party seeking justice. Authorities are obligated to fulfill their duty and ensure that the individual found guilty is held accountable for their actions. This incident serves as a litmus test for the rule of law in Pakistan, and it is imperative that the judicial system sends a clear message: no one, regardless of their financial power or societal position, is above the law.
As citizens, we hope for a system where justice prevails. It is crucial for the state to take a firm stand in upholding the law, thus reinforcing the principle that justice is blind to wealth. By doing so, the government can help rebuild public trust in a system that too often appears skewed in favor of the affluent. Only then can we aspire to create a society where the rights of all individuals are protected and respected, irrespective of their social standing.
A peaceful and law-abiding society can be achieved when a fair and impartial judicial system is implemented in a State. This can also prevent tragic incidents where people take the law into their own hands, administering punishment to culprits themselves.

Equipping children
We all love gadgets, and we all want them to be waterproof, heatproof, and come with a guarantee that makes us feel secure about their performance. But when it comes to humans, what are the essential elements that ensure our children are prepared for the future? Since 2020, the world has changed dramatically, and many of us feel stuck.
Those who have adapted, embraced change, and avoided rigidity have thrived. But does our education system prepare the new generation for the challenges ahead?
Are we truly making them future-proof? Do private schools teach the fundamental values that define our humanity? While our children may excel in certain areas, they often fall behind in essential skills. For example, when comparing a 4-year-old from our system to one from another, it becomes clear that communication skills in our children haven’t advanced as much. The word ‘emotion’ also seems to lag behind. As emotional beings, it’s essential to nurture our norms, emotions, and values.

Stolen creations
Seffy Soomro, a Sindh-based artist from Daharki, Ghotki district, alleges his lost paintings were used in the drama serial “Kabhi Mein Kabhi Tum” on a private entertainment channel. Soomro showcased his artwork at Frere Hall’s 2017 exhibition. Afterward, he inquired about his paintings, only to be told they were lost. Recently, he identified his paintings featured in the drama serial.
If true, this is a grave injustice to Soomro, who invested emotions and hard work into his thesis project. Just as writers connect with their words, artists pour their souls into their creations.
Soomro deserves credit and ownership of his paintings. If his claim is legitimate, the artwork should be returned to him. This incident emphasizes the importance of protecting artists’ intellectual property rights and respecting their creative endeavours.

Claudia Sheinbaum
Claudia Sheinbaum has made history! She is set to become Mexico’s first female president, officially taking charge on 1 October 2024. Assuming leadership during a period of significant economic uncertainty, she faces the daunting challenge of steering the country toward stability.
In this pivotal moment, Sheinbaum’s vision and leadership will be crucial in navigating complex issues such as poverty, education and healthcare. With her background in science and public policy, there is hope that she will implement effective reforms that resonate with the needs of the Mexican people.
Like the Government of Pakistan, I also extend my best wishes for her success in all her efforts to bring progress to Mexico.
