Coastline flooding
Coastline flooding is a sudden and abrupt inundation caused by a short-term increase in water level due to a storm surge and extreme tides. The magnitude and extension depend on coastal topography storm surge conditions, and broader bathymetry of coastal area. Pakistan has often been listed among top 10 nations most susceptible to the effects of climate change, including rising sea levels.
This kind of incident has always occurred near areas of Sindh where sea is located in particular Karachi. And there are also other countries such as the Netherlands: 58.7% flood risks, Bangladesh: 57.5%, Vietnam: 46.0%, and Egypt: 40.5%. But what is the reason that this problem is not ending and instead increasing day by day? Human activities such as unplanned urban development and alteration in natural coastline features contribute and enhance this vulnerability.

Social media: Negative impact on teens!
I am writing to bring attention to a pressing issue that revolves around detrimental effects of social media on the lives of teenagers. In this modern era, social media undoubtedly holds a significant position in our lives, however, it is crucial to acknowledge negative impacts it imposes, especially on impressionable adolescents. Negative consequences of social media on teenagers’ lives are manifold, most notably their mental health, which can be significantly compromised due to their exposure to these platforms. Teenagers, driven by their impulsive nature, often fail to realise the potential risks associated with sharing intimate photos or divulging highly personal stories on social media.
As a result, they become susceptible to various forms of abuse, ranging from cyber bullying to harassment and even blackmail. Regrettably, the damaging effects extend beyond their immediate safety concerns and privacy. Social media has been closely linked to an exponential rise in cases of anxiety and depression among teenagers. The constant pressure to maintain a certain image or conform to societal expectations, coupled with resulting sense of inadequacy, can immensely contribute to the development of mental health issues. In essence, it is crucial for us as a society to acknowledge and address negative influence social media exerts on the lives of teenagers. Adequate measures should be implemented to educate and guide our youth on responsible use of these platforms. Moreover, it is imperative to create a supportive environment that encourages open discussion about mental health. Only by doing so can we mitigate the adverse effects and foster a healthier and more productive future for our young generation.

Disadvantage of earphones
We keep our earphones on most of the time, whether it is for a zoom meeting, listening to our favourite tracks, playing games, or just to cancel outside noise. Let’s just say, earphones have become an inseparable part of our lives. And that’s a cause for concern. They can be convenient for listening to music or taking calls, but it’s important to be aware of the potential risks.
Prolonged and loud headphone use can lead to hearing loss or damage. It’s a good idea to take breaks, keep the volume at a moderate level, and consider using noise-cancelling headphones to reduce need for high volume. Also, using over-the-ear headphones instead of in-ear ones can help minimise the direct impact on your ears. Taking care of your hearing is very important.

Pollution
Pakistan is facing significant pollution challenges, which include air and water pollution. High levels of air pollution are commonly seen in major cities such as Lahore and Karachi due to industrial emissions, vehicular exhaust and agricultural burning. Lahore is prone to experiencing smog, a dangerous combination of fog and air pollution. The severity of this phenomenon increases in winter, causing respiratory issues and vision problems. However, Inadequate waste disposal and industrial discharge affecting rivers and groundwater are also concerned when it comes to water pollution.
Although efforts are being made to address these issues, it is crucial to have sustained measures and public awareness for long-term improvement. Government has to put in place measures to combat pollution, such as introducing more stringent environmental rules, promoting renewable energy and implementing waste management programmes. It would be crucial to raise awareness among public about the effects of pollution and environmental responsibility through educational campaigns and community.

LEAFS project
The desert locust, a formidable agricultural pest, poses a significant threat to Pakistan’s crops, migrating from both the west and east. In response, the World Bank initiated the LEAFS Project in 2020, allocating a substantial $200m loan. The project aimed to combat locust outbreaks, restore livelihoods and enhance food security. However, mismanagement marred its execution, with reports of funds, estimated at $15-20m, being diverted to luxury purchases instead of aiding affected communities as intended.
By 2021, the World Bank, alarmed by the lack of progress and misuse of funds, decided to downsize the project to $104m due to concerns over implementation. Despite this adjustment, irregularities persisted, leading to the project’s ultimate termination in January 2024, citing “highly unsatisfactory” performance. The fallout extended beyond financial repercussions. The abrupt termination resulted in the dismissal of 86 entomologists without proper notice or outstanding salaries, sparking legal action and highlighting labour rights violations.
As affected employees seek justice through legal channels, the incident underscores the nation’s failure to prioritise foreign investment for genuine state advancement. The LEAFS Project debacle serves as a stark reminder of the importance of transparent and accountable governance in utilising foreign aid effectively for the betterment of the nation.
