Desert Locust

The Desert Locust, a formidable agricultural pest, poses a significant threat to Pakistan’s crops, migrating from both the west and east. In response, the World Bank initiated the LEAFS Project in 2020, allocating a substantial $200 million USD loan. The project aimed to combat locust outbreaks, restore livelihoods and enhance food security. However, misman-agement marred its execution, with reports of funds, estimated at $15-20 million USD, being diverted to luxury purchases instead of aiding affected communities as intended.

By 2021, the World Bank, alarmed by the lack of progress and misuse of funds, decided to downsize the project to $104 million USD due to concerns over implementation. Despite this adjustment, irregularities persisted, leading to the project’s ultimate termination in January 2024, citing “highly unsatisfactory” performance. The fallout extended beyond financial repercussions. The abrupt termination resulted in the dismissal of 86 entomologists without proper notice or outstanding salaries, sparking legal action and highlighting labour rights violations. As affected employees seek justice through legal channels, the incident underscores the nation’s failure to prioritize foreign investment for genuine state advancement. The LEAFS Project debacle serves as a stark reminder of the importance of transparent and accountable governance in utilizing foreign aid effectively for the betterment of the nation.

CCE 2020 Result

SPSC announced the CCE-2020 advertisement in 2019 and conducted the written exam in 2020, but it took more than 2 years to announce the result. Suddenly, SPSC was terminated by a court verdict due to corrupt practices in the recruitment process. After the institution was reinstated, it was revealed that the CCE-2020 exam result had been manipulated by former SPSC high officials. Despite being under court supervision, the exam was affected by corrupt practices.

Following court directions, SPSC conducted a fresh CCE-2020 exam almost six months ago. Candidates are eagerly awaiting the result, hoping for merit to prevail this time. However, the delay in announcing the CCE-2020 result raises severe suspicion among candidates and the general public who closely monitor SPSC activities. It is imperative for SPSC to restore trust and maintain its dignity by ensuring a merit-based recruitment system.

PPP manifesto

The PPP’s manifesto for the upcoming February 8, 2024, elections is a comprehensive plan that aims to address the pressing social and economic challenges facing Pakistan. Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has outlined a vision centered on the principles of social justice, eco-nomic empowerment and democratic governance.

At the heart of the manifesto are ten key points that reflect the party’s commitment to improv-ing the lives of ordinary Pakistanis. These points include doubling salaries to ensure fair compensation for workers, establishing Green Energy Parks in every district to promote sus-tainable development and providing up to 300 units of free electricity to the poorest segments of society. Education and healthcare are also top priorities for the PPP. The Party has pledged to ensure easy access to education for every child and to establish a free healthcare system across the country. Additionally, the PPP plans to build three million houses for the poorest people, ex-pand the Benazir Income Support Program and issue Benazir Kisan/Hari Cards and Benazir Mazdoor Cards to provide financial support to farmers and laborers. Despite these challenges, the PPP’s manifesto has garnered widespread support, particularly among the poor and marginalized communities. The party’s historical significance, coupled with popular programs like the Benazir Income Support Program, has bolstered its appeal among voters. As Pakistan prepares for the February 8, 2024, elections, the PPP finds itself in a strong posi-tion to lead the country towards a brighter and more prosperous future. With its comprehen-sive manifesto and commitment to social justice, the PPP aims to address the needs of the people and steer Pakistan towards sustainable development and inclusive growth.
