Healing Priorities

I am writing to express my concern and advocate for improvement in our healthcare system. Access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right and it is crucial that we address the current challenges in our system. One pressing issue is the affordability of healthcare services. Many individuals and families are burdened by high medical costs, leading to delayed or neglected medical attention. The importance of mental health cannot be overstated. Integrating mental health services into our healthcare system is crucial for addressing the growing mental health challenges in our society. This includes destigmatizing mental health issues, increasing mental health awareness and ensuring adequate resources for mental health support. In conclusion, I urge the concerned authorities to consider these critical aspects of our healthcare system and work towards creating positive changes. A healthy population is the foundation of a thriving society and by prioritizing healthcare improvement, we can ensure a better quality of life for all.

Illicit tobacco trade

The Pakistani market is facing challenges due to a rise in illicit trade and smuggling, particularly in key sectors like tobacco. Illicit trade in tobacco has been increasing steadily since the last FED hike. A significant 50 percent of the tobacco market is now dominated by illicit cigarettes, causing the government to lose an estimated 240 billion rupees annually.

The extent of illicit tobacco in Pakistan is alarming: out of the 100 billion cigarette sticks circulating in the country, more than 50 percent are illicit. This widespread infiltration underscores the significant impact of illicit tobacco trade on Pakistan’s economy.

Industry experts advocate for a considerate approach, moving away from burdening legal tobacco with higher taxes. Instead, they propose a strategic shift, bringing illicit tobacco manufacturers into the tax system. This move aims not only to increase revenue but also to formalize the economy—a crucial step for sustainable growth, according to experts.

Documenting and taxing illicit tobacco trade would substantially boost the economy. By legitimizing and taxing these businesses, the government can ensure they contribute to the tax pool. This step is essential for fortifying the economic framework and mitigating the negative impact of illicit trade.ABUBAKAR KAREEM

Combating terrorism

Through the courtesy of the columns of your prestigious newspaper, I am writing to express grave concerns about the escalating issue that plagues our society.

It is a matter that requires our urgent attention and collective efforts to address. Terrorism, in all its forms, poses a significant threat to the safety and well-being of individuals and communities worldwide.

It is important that we come together as a society to condemn acts of terrorism and find ways to prevent future occurrences. Education and awareness play a crucial role in combating terrorism. Furthermore, it is essential that authorities worldwide coordinate their efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for acts of terrorism. Let us unite against terrorism and work towards a world where peace and harmony prevail.
