Open debate on Israel-Hamas conflict

Speaking at the UN Security Council’s open debate on Israel-Hamas conflict today the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken reaffirmed the US commitment to a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. This, in fact, is the only option to a permanent resolution of the decades-long Israel-Palestinian conflict.

I too, in my post of October 18 posted on /X and Facebook titled “Israeli barbarism in Gaza heightens beyond limits,” later published in Daily Pakistan Observer on October 21 emphasized that a permanent resolution of the long-drawn-out Israeli-Palestinian conflict lies in “Two-State Solution, proposed framework for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by establishing two states for two peoples: Israel for the Jewish people and Palestine for the Palestinian people.

It is encouraging to know that US Secretary of State Antony Bliken, during the course of his address at the UN today, called upon the UN and the world nations to endeavour to bring about a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. This devastating war has already taken a heavy toll on innocent people. According to latest media reports, the number of people killed in Gaza has exceeded 5,000. More than 15,000 people have been injured so far.

An immediate ceasefire is in order. Beyond any shadow of doubt, this war has the potential to spread and engulf not only the region but the entire world. Before this happens, the United Nations and the international community must work in unison to bring about an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. They must do so, to save the region and the entire world from an impending catastrophe of unparalleled magnitude.

Pak economy

The economy of Pakistan is in the dire straits and the country is drifting rudderless in chaotic ocean of the world as it is facing severe dearth of capable leadership which could steer the country out of crises. Our economists have bitterly failed to seek solution of our economic woes. Our administrative system seems unfit to address our domestic issues. Corruption galore everywhere and poverty is rampant.

Our justice system, so far, could not yield the intended results instead it fuelled more unrest and instability. The life of people has become miserable except privileged class which enjoys every facility of life banking on public money.

As we have become almost bankrupt – resultantly, as a nation, we have lost our credibility and grace at international arena. We have become beggars before IMF and other donor agencies. Our government is bound to adopt humble posture before each and every – even unjust – demands of IMF.

The people at the helm of affairs are either headless or belong to elite class who is indifferent to the problems of the masses. They are using mean tactics to address economic woes which are even not short-term solutions of the problems. Instead of slashing their own perks and privileges, the poor people are being made scapegoats. Inflated power bills, rising of petroleum prices on a fortnightly basis and skyrocketing inflation are the apt examples to be quoted as barbaric acts of government.

Snatching bread from a common man, privatizing schools, pension cuts from middle class and downsizing in government institutions without sane considerations are the priorities of the government instead of withdrawal of privileges from the elite class which is huge burden on government exchequer.

Boycott of Israeli products

NO kudos is enough for Maryan Apparel Private Limited, supplier of Army uniforms, for refusing to accept the latest orders from Israel, though the company is in business with the country since 2015.

Though the Kerala-based company’s business experience with the West Asian country has been nice with the Israelis being certified as “good people” with whom “it is very easy to deal with” and who are also “very prompt with payment”; still it has severed trading connection with Israel army and ready to accept economic losses just to lodge protest against the country’s ongoing military assaults in Gaza!

This is called ethics morality humanity and attitude of no compromise with evil and misdeeds even at the expense of own economic interest! What a shining noble specimen of remaining true to one’s own conscience!

Through sheer action values and principles, Maryan Apparel Private Limited has boldly transmitted the message that everything can be sacrificed for the sake of morality and truth, but morality and truth cannot be sacrificed for the sake of anything and also never to compromise with any wrong and injustice.

Had most of the countries and business establishments around the world been as upright and conscientious; the war mongers (like Russia) and muscle-flexers (like Israel) would have been taught the lesson long ago. The Kerala-based army uniform supplier deserves special thanks for their unique mode of protest through such bold, but non-violent ways.
