Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s directive to maintain strict vigilance against the spread of Mpox, following the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) declaration of its outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern, is a timely and crucial step. The recent detection of Mpox case in Mardan underscores urgent need for stringent measures. The patient, who had recently returned from abroad, was swiftly quarantined, demonstrating efficacy of protocols in place. However, this incident serves as a reminder of potential risks posed by international travel, especially in a country like Pakistan, where diaspora is vast and far-reaching.

The PM’s instructions to enhance screening at airports, seaports and borders are timely and essential. The ability to identify and isolate suspected cases at these junctures would be key to containing the virus and preventing its spread within the country. The assurances from Dr. Malik Mukhtar Ahmad, Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Health, that surveillance and screening measures have been bolstered at all airports and entry points are reassuring. The focus on monitoring individuals arriving from Africa, America and Gulf countries is particularly prudent, considering reported cases in these regions. However, beyond these immediate measures, there is a pressing need to raise public awareness about Mpox. As the PM rightly emphasised, a comprehensive awareness campaign should be launched across various platforms, similar to efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic. Educating the public on how the virus spreads, recognising symptoms, and understanding steps to take if symptoms appear will empower individuals to protect themselves and others. This knowledge dissemination is crucial in a country where misinformation can spread as quickly as any virus. The coordinated efforts of all stakeholders, from government bodies to healthcare providers, will be instrumental in tackling this situation. With right mix of vigilance, preparedness and public awareness, we can navigate through this challenge effectively in order to safeguard public health.
