Vetoing justice in Gaza

THE veto by the US in the UN Security Council, blocking a resolution that called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, marks a deeply troubling moment in the ongoing crisis. This veto, delivered despite overwhelming international support for halting the violence, underscores a stark reality: the US is not just an observer but a direct accomplice in the violence and suffering of innocent Palestinians.

The UN resolution, proposed by the Council’s 10 non-permanent members, sought an urgent ceasefire and the release of hostages. Yet, the US, using its veto power as a permanent Security Council member, stood alone in opposition. This decision not only defies the growing global call for peace but also exposes a moral bankruptcy in US foreign policy, particularly toward the Israel-Palestine conflict. This in fact is not an isolated incident. It follows a consistent pattern of US support for Israel’s actions, despite the clear evidence of human rights abuses. For instance, when the US Senate blocked legislation that would have halted the sale of certain weapons to Israel, it made clear its unwillingness to use its significant leverage to curb the violence. The refusal to halt arms sales, despite the ongoing slaughter in Gaza, further deepens the United States’ complicity. The US’s unconditional backing of Israel has emboldened the Israeli government, giving it the license to continue its military assault against innocent Palestinians without fear of diplomatic or economic repercussions. This blind support for Israel is not only morally indefensible, it is also strategically short-sighted. It will only further promote anti-US sentiments in the Muslim world. For global stability and peace, the US should stop shielding Israel from international condemnation and take meaningful steps to get the brutalities stopped in Gaza. This is the only path toward a sustainable peace in Gaza and the broader Middle East.
