PESHAWAR – The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to replace the existing number plates of all vehicles across the province with new RFID-enabled plates.
The Excise Department said the new number plates will feature Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system stickers, which will allow improved vehicle identification and tracking.
The new system will apply to both government and private vehicles across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Officials said the existing vehicle number plates are currently provided by the provincial government at a cost of Rs1,200, while the new RFID-equipped number plates will cost Rs4,000.
Authorities said the RFID stickers will help in identifying and tracking vehicles more efficiently, improving monitoring and record management.
Vehicle number plates are official identification tags issued by authorities to register and track vehicles.
They contain unique numbers or codes that help law enforcement agencies, transport departments, and other institutions identify vehicle ownership and records. Modern vehicle registration systems are increasingly adopting smart technologies, such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) features, to improve tracking, security, and administrative efficiency.
Updated number plate systems can help reduce vehicle-related crimes, support digital record management, and make verification processes faster. Governments introduce such measures to enhance road safety and strengthen monitoring of vehicles operating within their jurisdictions.
