US position unchanged

THE United States has assured Pakistan that its position on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute remains unchanged, reaffirming that the issue requires a settlement between Pakistan and India. The clarification is significant, particularly in the wake of remarks by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who described Jammu and Kashmir as an “important part of India” during his visit to Srinagar on 19 August. Islamabad had sought clarification from Washington over whether these remarks signalled a shift in American policy. The US response has helped dispel concerns about a possible change in its position.

President Donald Trump has also repeatedly offered to mediate between Pakistan and India over the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Such offers indicate Washington’s recognition that the issue remains unresolved and requires a peaceful settlement. This position is consistent with the long-standing international framework, including relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions that envisage a process to determine the future of Jammu and Kashmir in accordance with the wishes of its people. For decades, the people of Kashmir have awaited the fulfilment of commitments made to them under the UN framework. Their right to self-determination remains at the heart of the dispute, while India has resisted the implementation of the UN-backed process.

The prolonged suffering of Kashmiris underscores the failure of the international community to translate its commitments into a lasting political settlement. Given its global influence and diplomatic engagement with both countries, Washington must encourage meaningful dialogue and support a peaceful settlement. The urgency of resolving the dispute cannot be overstated. Pakistan and India are nuclear-armed neighbours with a history of conflicts and Kashmir has remained a major source of bilateral tension. Any escalation carries risks that extend far beyond the region. What is needed is sustained diplomatic engagement, renewed dialogue and a credible path towards a peaceful settlement in line with relevant UN resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people. Lasting peace in South Asia depends, in significant measure, on addressing this long-standing issue rather than allowing it to remain unresolved.
