ISLAMABAD – Pakistani mainstream media’s credibility crisis deepened dramatically after local TV channel crossed shocking ethical line, turning a leaked private sex video into prime-time “content” under the banner of investigative journalism.
An explicit clip circulating widely on social media, infamously dubbed “Umairy Leaks,” reportedly shows a woman with younger man in a private setting. Multiple versions of the footage surfaced online, some exceeding seven minutes in length. The video is believed to have been recorded consensually by the individuals involved and was never meant for public consumption.
Instead of condemning violation of privacy or discouraging the spread of obscene material, New News chose to amplify the scandal. The channel invited the woman seen in the leaked video to appear on its program Pukaar, where she was interviewed on camera, alongside her parents, about deeply personal incident.

What outraged viewers even more is that Pukaar brands itself as an investigative journalism show. While the country grapples with economic instability, political turmoil, and security challenges, host Tehmina Sheikh appeared to set aside serious national issues in favor of sensationalizing a private, consensual encounter for ratings.
Clips from the broadcast quickly went viral, triggering widespread condemnation across social media. Viewers accused both the anchor and the channel of indulging in yellow journalism, exploiting a woman’s trauma, and normalizing the public shaming of private individuals under the guise of news.
Activists blasted the episode, calling it a disgrace to the journalism. He said that either the anchor needs to learn the most basic principles of journalistic ethics or those who hired her should feel ashamed. He questioned how such journalism could ever be defended, where a woman is subjected to intrusive, inappropriate questioning in front of her parents while cameras roll, stressing that journalists are duty-bound to uphold at least the most fundamental professional and moral standards.
The incident has reignited debate over Pakistan’s collapsing media ethics, with critics warning that when investigative journalism turns into voyeurism, the industry doesn’t just lose relevance.
