President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States has agreed to resume negotiations with Iran after Tehran asked to continue diplomatic engagement.
However, he declared that the ceasefire reached between the two countries in June is no longer in effect.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Iran had requested the continuation of talks and that the United States had accepted the proposal. However, he emphasised that the previous ceasefire had officially ended.
The announcement follows a fresh exchange of military strikes between the two countries. Iranian forces launched attacks on US military facilities in Gulf states on Thursday in retaliation for American strikes targeting Iran’s southern coastal and eastern provinces earlier this week.
The United States and Iran had reached an interim agreement last month that halted a four-month conflict, easing concerns over disruptions to global energy supplies.
Despite the temporary truce, renewed hostilities have complicated efforts to end the conflict. The continued fighting has added political pressure on Trump as his Republican Party heads into this year’s midterm elections amid elevated fuel prices and growing voter dissatisfaction.
