WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump has urged his aides to arrange a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the earliest possible opportunity, the American media reported while citing the official sources.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump has privately discussed the possibility of holding a direct meeting with Kim Jong Un.
The two leaders are expected to have an opportunity to meet in November on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
Trump and Kim last met on June 30, 2019, at Panmunjom, a truce village inside the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea.
During the historic encounter, Trump briefly crossed into North Korean territory, becoming the first sitting US president to do so.
The meeting followed two landmark summits between Trump and Kim. Their first summit was held in Singapore in June 2018, followed by a second meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam, in February 2019.
However, the diplomatic engagements failed to produce a lasting agreement on North Korea’s nuclear program or its denuclearization.
Since the collapse of the talks, North Korea has continued developing its nuclear and missile capabilities, while diplomatic efforts between Washington and Pyongyang have remained largely stalled.
A new meeting between Trump and Kim could potentially reopen dialogue on North Korea’s nuclear program and other security issues on the Korean Peninsula.
