THE growing trend of abusive language in politics is a reflection of how far our society has strayed from its moral and ethical foundations.
What was once considered unacceptable in any decent conversation is now being cheered on public platforms. Particularly disturbing is the use of derogatory remarks involving the word “mother.” Even when such language is not directed at a specific individual’s mother, its usage in a disrespectful manner reflects a deep cultural and spiritual decline. What is even more troubling is the reaction of educated and seemingly cultured individuals, including media anchors and public figures, who justify or even praise such vulgarity under the guise of freedom of expression or emotional outrage.
In our religious and cultural values, the word “mother” is sacred. Islam places immense emphasis on the respect and honour of mothers. The Qur’an instructs believers to show kindness and humility toward their parents, particularly the mother. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was once asked who deserves the best treatment, he replied, “Your mother,” repeating it three times before mentioning the father. This repeated emphasis highlights not only the mother’s position in a family but also in society. In another narration, the Prophet said that paradise lies beneath the feet of the mother. These teachings leave no room for ambiguity, disrespect toward motherhood, whether direct or symbolic, is a violation of faith.
When such sacred terms are used casually or abusively in political slogans, rallies or discussions, it reflects not just poor taste but a spiritual void. Even if the words are not targeting a specific individual, their impact is widespread. They degrade public discourse, normalize vulgarity and create an environment where decency is mocked and aggression is admired. This shift does not happen in isolation. When public figures and influencers respond to vulgar language with laughter, applause or silence, they become enablers. Their behaviour shapes public perception, especially among the younger generation, who begin to see crudeness as courage and disrespect as strength.
This erosion of values is not without consequences. Abusive language in politics tears apart the social fabric. It removes the possibility of healthy debate, replacing it with bitterness and division. It teaches future generations that shouting louder and insulting others is more effective than reasoning and understanding. It destroys the space where different opinions can coexist respectfully.
There is a pressing need for society to take a stand. Respectful dialogue must be encouraged, not just in formal forums but in everyday conversation. Media professionals, political commentators and influencers must lead by example. They have the power to elevate or degrade the level of public debate. Upholding the sanctity of motherhood should be non-negotiable in any civilized society, regardless of political passion or anger.
A society that dishonours its mothers, even through careless language, cannot expect to thrive. We must remind ourselves and each other of our values. Words matter. They shape minds, attitudes and ultimately, destinies. Let us use them to heal, to inspire and to build not to hurt, divide or destroy.
