Millions of mourners poured into the streets of Tehran on Sunday to pay their final respects to Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, during a massive funeral procession.
A truck carrying Khamenei’s coffin, along with the coffins of his daughter, granddaughter, son-in-law, and daughter-in-law, slowly made its way through the sea of mourners as people gathered to bid farewell.
The funeral procession followed a designated route through the Iranian capital before reaching Azadi Square, the final destination of the Tehran ceremonies.
According to the funeral schedule, Khamenei’s body will later be taken to the Iraqi holy cities of Karbala and Najaf before being laid to rest in Mashhad, Iran.
Iranian media outlets, including Tasnim News Agency and Press TV, reported that millions of people participated in the funeral procession across Tehran.
Press TV quoted officials as describing the ceremony as the “largest public gathering in the country’s modern history.”
Tasnim News Agency also reported that the vehicle carrying the coffins of the late supreme leader and his family members entered the main funeral procession route amid vast crowds of grieving mourners.
