IN a policy meeting, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Yahya Afridi, underscored the importance of digital transformation in the judicial sector, emphasizing that the reform initiative aims to make the justice system more accessible, transparent and efficient.
This vision of a fully digitized court system, from the district courts to the apex court, is not just a technological upgrade, it is a critical step towards improving service delivery and ensuring that justice is timely and equitable for all citizens.
The Chief Justice highlighted that digitization is a citizen-centric reform that will enhance transparency and streamline the judicial process. In a country where case backlogs are a long-standing issue, the transition to digital platforms promises to reduce delays and increase the accessibility of legal services. This is particularly important as the public’s trust in the judicial system depends on its ability to deliver justice swiftly and fairly. Among the key components of this digital overhaul is the creation of e-libraries in courts across Pakistan. For years, courtrooms have been burdened with insufficient space for the vast amounts of legal resources that judges and lawyers need to access. Physical libraries, while essential, have limitations in terms of space and accessibility.
E-libraries, however, will provide a vast array of legal literature, precedents and case law in a digital format, available at the fingertips of judicial officers and legal practitioners. This shift will not only save valuable time and space but also streamline the process of legal research, improving the overall efficiency of the judicial system. Another major milestone in the Chief Justice’s vision is the establishment of a fully integrated e-court ecosystem, which will link all levels of the judiciary through secure digital platforms. A fully connected judiciary will allow for digital filing, case tracking and instant access to records, ensuring that all court tiers can operate cohesively. This interconnected framework will provide greater transparency in case proceedings. Most importantly, it will ensure that justice is delivered more swiftly and at a lower cost. By ensuring that all stakeholders from judges to litigants have access to a fully integrated and secure digital platform, our judiciary can begin to address the long-standing issues of inefficiency and inaccessibility, delivering justice in a more timely and affordable manner.
