DUBAI – Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has broken the record of scoring the highest runs by any player in their maiden T20 World Cup on Thursday.

Azam achieved this feat during the second semi-final clash of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup while playing against Australia at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

He has secured the top spot on the list with 269 runs, followed by Australia’s Matthew Hayden and England’s Joe Root with 265 and 249 runs, respectively.

The 27-year-old batsman also surpassed Indian cricketer Virat Kohli to smash the fastest 2500 T20I runs. He achieved the feat in 62 runs while Kohli had taken 68 matches to complete the 2500 runs.

Coming to the match, Australia skipper Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to bowl first. While Australia finished at the second spot in Group 1 after winning four matches out of five, Pakistan was at the top of Group 2 of the Super 12 stage after winning all five matches.
