ISLAMABAD – Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday formed larger bench to hear life-long disqualification case under Article 62(1) (f) tomorrow at 11:30 am.

On the first day of 2024, the apex court formed 7-member bench comprising Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Yahya Afridi, Justice Aminuddin, Justice Jamal Mandokhail, Justice Mohammad Ali Mazhar, and Justice Musarrat Hilali to hear the case related to lifetime disqualification of Pakistani leaders.

The court took notice of the matter related to hearing of plea made by JUI-F leader Mir Badshah Qaisarani against his lifetime disqualification and then decided to hear all linked cases.

CJP-led bench will determine once and for all the raging debate on whether aspirants disqualified under Article 62(1)(f) could run for election in light of amendments in the Elections Act 2017.

Ousted premier Nawaz Sharif and Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party leader Jahangir Tareen faced disqualification from holding public office in 2017 under Article 62(1)(f).

The legislation defines merits for qualification and Article 63 for disqualification for a person to become a member of the Parliament. Any individual disqualified under other laws may return to parliament after 5 years from the date of conviction, but the disqualification under 62(1) (f) is for a lifetime.

No changes in election date as Supreme Court annuls LHC order on ROs appointment
