ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is set to witness dazzling Supermoon of 2026, when Moon comes closest to Earth, appearing larger and brighter than usual.
SuperMoon 2026
Astronomy enthusiasts and stargazers across Pakistan are in for spectacular treat as first Supermoon of 2026 lights up the night sky on Saturday, January 3. Dubbed the “Wolf Moon,” this extraordinary event will mark the finale of a series of Supermoons that began in October 2025, promising a celestial show not to be missed.
A Supermoon occurs when the moon draws closer to Earth than usual, making it appear dramatically larger and more luminous. Experts reveal that this moon will shine up to 30% brighter and look 14% bigger than a regular full moon, offering a breathtaking spectacle for skywatchers.

Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has confirmed that the Supermoon will rise in Pakistan at 5:51 pm on January 3, reaching 99.8% illumination. Skywatchers will have an extended viewing window, with the moon prominently visible on both nights of January 3 and 4.
During the phenomenon, the moon will be approximately 362,312 kilometers from Earth, making it appear about 6–7% larger than an average full moon. Astronomers note that Supermoons usually appear in sequences of three to four, and this January 3 event will bring this particular series to a dramatic close.
Looking ahead, Suparco said the next Supermoon will appear in November 2026, marking the year’s second and final Supermoon, with no third expected.
There are different types, the true supermoon happens at exact perigee, a blue moon supermoon is a rare second full moon in a month, and a blood moon supermoon occurs during a total lunar eclipse, creating a striking red hue.
Supermoons fascinated humans for centuries, giving rise to myths about storms, floods, and heightened human behavior, while many cultures link them to spiritual reflection, harvest festivals, and seasonal cycles. Though science shows only minor effects on tides, the visual spectacle and cultural significance make supermoons a magical event that captivates skywatchers worldwide.
