The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has escalated its efforts to combat gas theft across its franchise areas in Sindh and Balochistan. In recent raids conducted in Karachi and Hyderabad, illegal gas connections were disconnected as part of the company’s Counter Gas Theft Operations (CGTO) Wing and Recovery Department initiatives.

In Karachi’s old city areas of Soldier Bazar, Ranchore Line, and Ram Swamy, raids led to the discovery of five suspected tampered meters and three instances of Passing Unregistered Gas (PUG), where gas was being utilized without proper registration. A joint raid conducted by the Customer Relations Department (CRD) team in Karachi’s GulHasan Town revealed illegal gas supply to 2,500 houses via tapping points from SSGC’s 63 mm PE line.

The CRD team disconnected all connections, estimating a theft volume of 2,400,000 cubic meters per year Rs. 75,000,000. Additionally, the CRD team cracked down on Shanti Nagar (Sindhi Para) in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi, where residents were supplied gas through rubber pipes to eight houses, estimating a theft volume of 7,680 cubic meters per year Rs. 240,000. In Hyderabad, two separate cases of domestic gas theft were uncovered in UmraniMohalla and Haala Naka, where residents had installed theft clamps on feeder mains.

These clamps were promptly removed by raiding teams. SSGC remains committed to curbing gas theft, recognizing it as a significant contributor to Unaccounted-for-Gas (UFG) or line losses, which impact the financial sustainability of gas utilities.
