ECONOMIC Coordination Committee has approved the recommendations of the advisory committee regarding 600 MHz spectrum auction, marking a significant step toward improving the country’s digital infrastructure. As announced by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja, this auction is a crucial development for addressing the growing demand for faster and more reliable internet. The spectrum auction promises to lay the groundwork for not only enhancing 3G and 4G services but also paving the way for the much-anticipated rollout of 5G technology.
The spectrum auction is not just about introducing a faster network, it is a much-needed solution to the ongoing issue of internet congestion that has been a consistent challenge for users in Pakistan. As Shaza Fatima Khawaja pointed out, Pakistan’s population of around 240 million currently operates on only 274 MHz of spectrum, resulting in slow speeds and widespread connectivity issues. By introducing additional spectrum, these problems can be alleviated, improving the quality of existing services and creating a foundation for the future growth of 5G. The auction process has already faced significant delays and there is little room for further postponement. The urgency of this auction cannot be overstated. Today, reliable internet is not a luxury; it is an essential part of daily life and business. Pakistan’s digital economy, driven by online businesses, e-commerce and a growing freelancing sector, depends heavily on fast and stable internet connections. Young people, in particular, are using the internet to earn money through freelancing and remote work and they are counting on the government to provide the infrastructure necessary for their success. Without reliable internet, the potential for growth in Pakistan’s IT exports will remain limited. The government’s Connect 2030 plan, which aims to provide a minimum internet speed of 100 Mbps over the next five years, is a welcome initiative. However, for this vision to be realized, the spectrum auction process must proceed without any further delays. The sooner this auction is completed, the sooner Pakistan can begin to realize the benefits of faster, more reliable internet services that will empower businesses, create jobs and boost IT exports.
