The first snowfall of the New Year continued intermittently across Gilgit-Baltistan. The local population is trapped in their homes. Heavy snowfall in Upper Ghizer, Hunza, Skardu, Astore and other areas has caused difficulties in traffic. Karakoram Highway has been blocked by landslides at various places.
The snow has completely covered the mountains and the cold is worse than usual. Snowfall increases the incidence of winters and hardships, while on the other hand, snow-capped mountains and valleys attract tourists.
The tourists are heading to Gilgit-Baltistan regardless of the severe cold. According to the Meteorological Department, intermittent snowfall will continue till January 9th.On the other hand, the district administration has issued a ban on travel to hilly areas.
