BRATISLAVA – Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was wounded outside a cultural community center in Handlova, after a government meeting.
People heard several shots as Fico came under attack. He was moved to the hospital, and the suspected attacker has been detained by local law enforcers.
The reported assassination attempt occurred in Handlova, some 100 miles northeast of Bratislava. Four shots were fired, one of which struck PM Fico in the abdomen. His current condition is unknown.
Slovakian President Zuzana Caputova and other leaders condemned the attack. Leaders also expressed shock and wished Fico speedy recovery.
Fico is known for supporting pro-European policies but more recently adopting more extreme positions, including anti-Western and pro-Russian stances.
