Widespread monsoon rains with heavy downpours are expected across upper and central parts of Pakistan from August 17 to 21, with occasional breaks.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, monsoon currents are currently affecting the upper regions and are expected to persist over the coming days.
A westerly wave is also likely to enter the upper parts of the country from August 17, potentially triggering widespread rainfall and isolated heavy downpours.
Kashmir
Scattered rain, wind and thundershowers, including isolated heavy falls, are expected in Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur from the evening or night of August 16 through August 21, with intermittent gaps.
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
Rain, wind and thundershowers with isolated heavy falls are likely in Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Nowshera, Charsadda, Swabi, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Hangu, Kurram, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar and Mardan from the evening or night of August 17 to August 21.
Karak, Tank, Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and Waziristan may receive rain and thunderstorms on August 20 and 21.
Islamabad and Punjab
Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang, Attock, Sialkot, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali and Noorpur Thal are expected to receive rain, wind and thundershowers, with isolated heavy falls, from the evening or night of August 16 through August 21.
Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan are likely to experience rain and thunderstorms on August 20 and 21.
Gilgit-Baltistan
Rain, wind and thundershowers are expected in Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche and Shigar from August 18 to 21, with occasional breaks.
Sindh and Balochistan
Most areas of Sindh and Balochistan are expected to remain hot and humid. However, Musakhel, Barkhan, Zhob, Kalat and Khuzdar may receive rain, wind and thundershowers from the evening or night of August 17 through August 20.
Possible Impacts and Advisories
The Met Office warned that heavy rainfall could trigger urban flooding in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Mardan, Swabi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore between August 17 and 20.
Landslides are also possible in mountainous areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galiyat and Kashmir. Tourists and travellers have been advised to exercise caution while travelling, particularly in vulnerable and hilly areas.
Farmers have also been advised to plan agricultural activities according to the prevailing weather and take appropriate measures to protect livestock.
