KARACHI- The Sindh government has decided to seek assistance from the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) to curb fake news and misleading information, directing the Information Department to strengthen monitoring across mainstream and social media platforms.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Sindh Information Department chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. Information Secretary Kashif Gulzar Sheikh, Director General Information Moez Pirzada and directors of various departments attended the meeting.
Memon directed the Information Secretary and all directors to establish an effective mechanism for monitoring fake news and develop a comprehensive media strategy to counter misinformation.
He said attempts to harm any individual or institution through false or misleading information would not be tolerated.
The senior minister directed the department to seek NCCIA assistance in identifying and addressing fake news. He called for the use of modern technology to monitor mainstream and social media platforms on a daily basis.
He said an effective monitoring system would be developed within the Information Department to identify, verify and respond to fake news in a timely manner.
Memon also called for greater coordination between the Sindh Information Department and the NCCIA. He said the agency’s assistance would be sought for legal action against individuals involved in creating and spreading fake news.
The senior minister said the Sindh government’s narrative was based on peace, tolerance, inter-provincial harmony and national unity.
He directed the Information Department to take additional measures to strengthen and effectively communicate the provincial government’s narrative through modern media platforms.
Memon also called for representatives from different segments of society to be included in efforts to communicate the government’s message.
He said the Information Department should focus not only on monitoring fake news but also on effectively promoting what the provincial government described as its positive and constructive narrative.
