In an important initiative to strengthen adherence to motor vehicle regulations, a collaborative action plan is on the horizon, specifically targeting the payment of fines for traffic law violations and motor vehicle taxes. Provincial Minister for Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control in Sindh, Mukesh Kumar Chawla, announced that, effective April 3, only vehicles displaying the new Ajrak number plates will be permitted to operate across the province.

The announcement came during an implementation meeting chaired by Chawla, attended by key officials including Secretary Excise Muhammad Saleem Rajput and DIG Traffic Police Karachi Ahmed Nawaz, along with representatives from the NHA and Safe City. During the meeting, Chawla emphasized the urgency of crafting a joint action plan to facilitate the payment of outstanding fines linked to motor vehicle regulations. As part of this initiative, he proposed establishing service desks for the Traffic Police at the Civic Center and Excise Department Facilitation Centers.

This move aims to create a streamlined one-window operation for the public to address their traffic-related payments efficiently. Additionally, Chawla stipulated the necessity for traffic police personnel to be deployed at road checkpoints to ensure compliance with traffic laws. He advocated for enhanced cooperation between the Traffic Police and Excise Department, especially regarding the integration of traffic challans with Motor Vehicle Registration (MVR) taxes. “The Excise Department will assist the traffic police by maintaining records of due challans,” he stated.

In further developments, Chawla asserted that the transfer of vehicles and the payment of taxes should be linked to the settlement of outstanding challans. He believes that by implementing joint measures and optimizing online systems, pending MVR taxes and traffic fines can be more effectively recognized and addressed from a centralized point. Moreover, the Provincial Minister issued a strong reminder that, starting April 3, any vehicle lacking the new Ajrak design number plates will no longer be permitted on the roads.
