The government’s plan to boost palm oil production by planting palm trees on 1,000 acres of land in Thatta, Sindh, has been plagued by significant delays over the past few years. The main hurdle has been the shortage of raw materials at the government-established palm seed extraction mill, be of having been unable to plant palm oil trees as per time and estimated area.

It is too essential for producing palm oil. Consequently, Pakistan has had to rely on costly imports of palm oil from countries like Indonesia and Malaysia each year. The Coastal Development Authority (CDA) of Sindh initially aimed to plant palm trees on 1,000 acres in Thatta district, but unfortunately, the project has not materialized as planned. In a recent meeting chaired by Provincial Minister Ismail Rahu, the CDA decided to launch the palm tree plantation project with an estimated cost of Rs 356 million.

To expand the project, an additional 2,000 acres of land were allocated to the Coastal Development Authority, and the Sindh Cabinet approved the plantation of palm trees on an additional 3,000 acres of forest land. In an effort to support palm oil production.
