In a meeting of the Sindh Culture Department, several historic sites across the province were officially recognized as cultural heritage, including the SayadHashmi Reference Library in Malir district. This decision came during an advisory committee session chaired by the Chief Secretary Sindh.mThe committee reviewed buildings slated for heritage status and emphasized that before declaring any structure as dangerous for demolition, a report from the culture department must be sought.
Among the newly protected sites is ‘Kute-Ji-Qabar’ (Dog’s Grave) in Qambar-Shahdadkot district, which has been approved for provincial heritage status, ensuring its preservation. Karachi’s historic Parsi Institute Compound, Jahangir Kothari Hall, Katrak Swimming Bath, and Cantonment Quarters, along with the SayadHashmi Reference Library, were also granted provincial heritage status.
The library, considered a treasure of Baloch national heritage with its vast collection of books, had been under threat due to the Sindh government’s plan to build an interchange for the Malir Expressway.
Additionally, the Old Mukhtiarkar Office in NaushehroFeroz, the Old Civil Court in Rohri, Sukkur district, and the Inspection Bungalow in Kandhkot (built in 1908) were also declared provincial heritage sites.
