Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah chaired a meeting to assess the advancements made in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure affected by floods. He urged the acceleration of ongoing projects and urged for continued efforts in securing funding from donors where necessary. The meeting, convened at CM House, was attended by Chief Secretary Dr. Fakhre Alam, Chairman P&D Sahkil Mangejo, PSCM Agha Wasif, Secretary School Education Dr. Shireen Narejo, Secretary Health Dr. Mansoor, Secretary Irrigation Niaz Abbasi, Secretary Works Nawaz Sohoo, CEO Peoples Housing Khalid Shaikh, and other relevant officials.
School Reconstruction Efforts: Secretary School Education Dr. Shireen Narejo provided an update on the reconstruction of schools affected by the 2022 floods. Out of 19,808 damaged schools, 7,503 require full reconstruction, with commitments from friendly countries and donor agencies totaling Rs60.972 billion.
The CM instructed the Chairman P&D to expedite project approvals and fund disbursements, while also preparing plans for the remaining 5,483 schools. Healthcare Initiatives: Secretary Health Dr. Mansoor Rizvi detailed the progress of the 1000 Days Integrated Health and Population Program, valued at Rs61,600 million ($280 million), with support from the World Bank and IsDB. The project aims to refurbish 392 dispensaries, reconstruct 121 BHUs, 97 RHCs, and 39 THQ Hospitals, among other objectives. The CM was briefed on the signing of an MoU between PPHI and the Program for operationalizing 50 dispensaries, along with advancements in ambulance procurement and skill development initiatives.
Sindh Flood Emergency Rehabilitation Project (SERP): Secretary Works & Services Nawaz Sohoo reported on the ongoing work on 131 roads spanning 19 districts, with progress ranging from 35 to 54 percent. The CM urged the department to expedite efforts to ensure timely completion of projects. Further Directions: The CM instructed all relevant departments to compile progress reports on flood-affected works for further review and monitoring.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue prioritizing the rehabilitation of flood-devastated infrastructure to facilitate the affected communities and expedite the region’s recovery process.
