ISLAMABAD – The federal government’s recent move to block mobile SIMs of non-filers has led to a significant increase in tax return submissions, with more than 276,000 individuals filing their returns following the enforcement action.

In a written response during the question hour session of the National Assembly, the Ministry of Finance revealed that during the current fiscal year, a total of 448,683 newly registered taxpayers have submitted their tax returns.

As part of the efforts to widen the tax net, the government had earlier instructed telecom companies to block the SIM cards of non-filers.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) subsequently shared data of 458,342 non-filers with telecom operators. Since then, 276,564 individuals have filed their returns after their SIMs were blocked.

The Finance Ministry further disclosed that in the fiscal year 2024–25, the FBR registered 2,403,831 new taxpayers. From these new entrants, the government has collected over Rs1.73 billion in tax revenue.

The SIM blockage initiative is part of a broader tax reform drive aimed at enhancing compliance and expanding the country’s tax base. The government vowed to continue measures that encourage tax culture and accountability across all sectors.
