Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman Tuesday reiterated his party’s resolve to stand firm on demand to cut power tariffs.

Addressing the participants of the Rawalpindi sit-in he urged Prime Minister Shehbaz-led government to deliver to avert Bangladesh premier Hasina Wajid-like situation.

He added: “You can’t rein in IPPs. So, listen, Shehbaz Sharif, your situation will also be like Hasina Wajid! “Hasina Wajid got a helicopter, but you will not get a plane. That is why I am saying give us our right.”

The JI chief said: “We are adamant. We are not quitting the sit-in. Don’t think we have got tired! You are mistaken.”

He added: “The government has been gimmicking over the matter but to no avail. “If you want to drive big vehicles, drive with your vehicles and pay for fuel.

He said that the government wasn’t taking any steps instead only making announcements despite our multiple calls.

The JI emir said that they expected the government to resolve the issues of inflated bills, adding that the capacity payments given to the Independent Power Producers were unacceptable to the people and that the government was not serious in reforming this sector.
