ISLAMABAD – In major blow to embattled Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf, Pakistan’s former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who has been convicted and jailed on in cipher case, was disqualified to contest elections for five years by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The disqualification order came days after the February 8 general elections, the Qureshi and other leaders were contesting amid heavy crackdown.
Qureshi is currently in jail as he was found guilty of leaking cipher case pertaining to diplomatic document that the FIA charge sheet alleges was never returned by PTI founder Imran Khan.
Two weeks before the elections, Pakistani court established under Official Secrets Act handed ex-foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi 10 years in jail.
Qureshi along with Imran Khan was facing trial in cipher case in Adiala Jail from last year for ‘distorting’ the facts of the diplomatic cipher.
Imran and his top aides were accused of conspiracy to misuse the contents of the cipher for political gains.
