ISLAMABAD – The Upper House on Friday approved the resolution seeking delay in general elections with a majority vote.

Senator Dilawar Khan tabled the resolution seeking delay in elections due to freezing weather and prevailing law and order situation.

Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi and PML-N lawmaker Afnanullah Khan opposed the resolution.

Referring to the law and order situation, Senator Dilawar Khan said that the agencies have issued security alerts. Mohsin Dawar and JJUI-F members have been attacked recently, he said, adding that the terrorists have even carried out attacks on security personnel in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In addition to that, he said, prevailing freezing weather is also a major hurdle. He said that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should start the process of delaying general elections scheduled to be held on February 8.

He, however, expressed full confidence and trust in the ECP.

The Senate passed the resolution with a majority vote.
