Sindh Commission on the Status of Women, Government of Sindh (SCSW) in collaboration with Women Development Department and with the support of KMC, UN Women, UNFPA and Aurat Foundation, hosted its 5th National Women’s Day (NWD) celebration on 12th February 2022 at Frere Hall, Karachi with the theme for this year being Zero Tolerance for Violence: Ongoing Initiatives for Political, Socioeconomic Empowerment of Women in Sindh.
Transgender also recognized for their struggles. Government of Sindh showcases women empowerment initiatives to participants and guests.
National Women’s Day celebrates the historic women movements in Pakistan. This event marks women from all walks of life, where they share their challenges and struggles, and celebrate their successes were selected winners were presented with the Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Award in various categories such as Science, Art, Health, Peace and Security, Education, Government and Entrepreneurship.
The transgender community was also celebrated for their achievements and Dr. Sarah Gill was presented with the award for being the first transgender doctor of Pakistan. The Lifetime Achievement Award was also presented to senior women with a long track record of their struggles and accomplishments despite hurdles faced.
The event was open to women, girls and transgender of Sindh who travelled to Karachi and was presided over by various dignitaries of the government including Minister for Women Development in Sindh Syeda Shehla Raza and Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah.
At this event different departments of Government of Sindh showcased their work for women empowerment and raised awareness amongst the women of Sindh. The audience was entertained by performances by Sheema Kermani and women officers Sindh Police.
