Schools closed, lockdown expected in India’s Delhi amid worsening air pollution crisis

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday announced the closure of schools for a week and several others emergency measures due to worsening air pollution crisis in the Indian capital.

Talking to media, the chief minister said that the government will also submit a proposal for lockdown in the city before the Supreme Court.

He said that the schools will hold online classes for the students for a week, starting from Monday, in

“For a week from Monday onwards, schools will be physically closed; classes to continue virtually so that children don’t have to breathe polluted air,” Indian media quoted the chief minister as saying.

He also announced that employees of government offices will work from home during the said time period, adding that a separate advisory on it will be issued for private offices.

“Construction activities will be prohibited in Delhi for four days, i.e., from November 14 to 17,” NDTV reported.

Kejriwal said that pollution level is rising in Delhi due to stubble burning in neighbouring states and called upon all stakeholders to make coordinated efforts to tackle the crisis.
