SC indicates treason proceedings against Qasim Suri

ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday indicated a severe treason proceedings against former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Qasim Suri.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa who was heading a three-member bench heard a case related to Qasim Suri’s disqualification.

Qasim Suri’s lawyer, Naeem Bokhari, argued that in his view, the issue of Qasim Suri’s disqualification and the matter of re-election in his constituency had become ineffective.

In response, Advocate Lashkari Reisani, said that Qasim Suri remained on an illegal oath, violated the constitution, and should face consequences.

Chief Justice inquired if Naeem Bokhari agreed with this, observing that if an agreement is reached, the decision of the Balochistan High Court would be maintained.

Naeem Bokhari replied that the Election Tribunal had held that Qasim Suri did not engage in any corrupt practices.

CJP Isa asked when Qasim Suri had resigned, to which Naeem Bokhari replied that Qasim Suri resigned on April 16, 2022.

The CJP questioned why the state was intact even after breaking the assembly illegally, and remarked that serious treason charges should be pursued against Qasim Suri.

CJP Isa also emphasized that the internal conflicts within the Supreme Court must end now.

In response to Naeem Bokhari’s inquiry about dissatisfaction, CJP Isa acknowledged internal disputes but stressed that Qasim Suri should admit his wrongdoing, observing that the constitutional violations should be addressed.

The CJP observed that that Qasim Suri did not allow motion of no-confidence, and the Supreme Court judges’ decision declared his act wrong because it led to the constitutional crises.

The CJP remarked that Suri would be summoned and asked about his actions.
