The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed amendment to Gilgit-Baltistan Order 2018 in order to set up a caretaker government and hold new elections in the region.
A seven-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed, heard a petition filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government regarding the general elections in G-B and the establishment of a caretaker setup.
The apex court has given a short order while a detailed verdict would be announced later.
During the proceedings, the advocate general of G-B said that the provincial government has no objection to the federal government’s plea. Justice Ijazul Hasan questioned that will the problems be resolved if the Election Act 2017 is extended to G-B?
Regarding the question about the election commission’s existence in the region, the attorney general said that it is already present. Justice Umar Ata Bandial said that G-B Order 2018 is still in effect as per the court order.
Justice Ijazul Hassan further said that the procedure for holding elections will be clarified in a detailed decision.
