The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has established a Rain Emergency Center at the Annexe Building of Civic Center in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. This initiative aims to tackle any emergency situations that may arise during the anticipated monsoon rains, said SBCA Director General Abdul Rasheed Solangi.
In collaboration with district administration, a comprehensive contingency plan has been prepared to address potential monsoon emergencies. Solangi emphasized the importance of coordination with Deputy Commissioners, the Secretary of Archives and Culture, and other relevant institutions to ensure swift and effective responses. “SBCA staff will be available at the Rain Emergency Center 24/7 to manage any unpleasant incidents,” stated Solangi.
He added that all directors and their officers will remain in their respective districts throughout the rainy season to provide on-ground support. Solangi himself will monitor the Rain Emergency Center and oversee the situation.
The public can report any emergencies to the center at 99232355. According to recent survey reports, 722 buildings across Karachi have been declared dangerous and uninhabitable, including 135 under the jurisdiction of the Archives and Culture Department. Other regions also have at-risk buildings: 81 in Hyderabad, 60 in Sukkur, 7 in Mirpurkhas, and 4 in Larkana. In light of the monsoon rains, the SBCA urges residents and occupants of these dangerous buildings to evacuate immediately to protect lives and property.
Solangi warned that water seepage during rains significantly increases the risk of building collapse and fire incidents due to short circuits. To manage emergency situations, four teams have been formed, including demolition squads, trained contractors, laborers, and machinery, all stationed at the Rain Emergency Center 24/7. Banners and flex signs will be displayed on all dangerous buildings to raise awareness.
If necessary, residents of extremely hazardous buildings will be evacuated with the assistance of district administration and police. A comprehensive awareness campaign has been launched through print media to inform the public. District Directors have begun issuing evacuation notices to occupants of dangerous buildings. A list of these buildings has been sent to the district administration, ensuring coordinated efforts to safeguard public safety.
