The federal government will award the construction contract for the Saudi-funded King Salman Hospital in Islamabad within the next 15 days, Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal said on Tuesday.
The 400-bed hospital project has remained stalled for almost two decades. According to Kamal, 12 companies have submitted bids before the tendering process closed on September 7.
The project will be developed in phases, with the initial 200-bed facility targeted for completion within two years. The government has also revised the project’s outdated design to reflect present-day healthcare requirements.
The minister said work on the 400-bed expansion of the Federal Government Polyclinic in Islamabad is expected to be completed by March 2027. The expansion of healthcare infrastructure comes amid increasing pressure on public hospitals in the federal capital.
Kamal also announced a Rs6.8 billion nationwide diabetes screening initiative, which will initially be launched in Islamabad before being extended to other provinces.
He estimated that nearly 45 million people in Pakistan could be living with diabetes, while millions remain undiagnosed because they have not undergone screening.
