RELIABLE internet connectivity has become a necessity for economic growth, education, healthcare and effective governance. The government’s focus on expanding digital infrastructure is, therefore, a welcome step towards building a digitally connected and economically competitive country.
Addressing an event on Tuesday, Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja said Pakistan is in the final stages of preparing a Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) framework for satellite internet services, adding that the government would provide a favourable and business-friendly environment for companies investing in this sector. This initiative reflects an important recognition that conventional connectivity infrastructure alone cannot meet the needs of a geographically diverse country. Satellite internet can play a vital role in connecting remote villages, mountainous regions, border areas and communities where laying optical fibre is difficult or commercially unviable. Reliable connectivity in these areas can improve access to online education, telemedicine, digital financial services and government facilities. It can also create opportunities for freelancers, entrepreneurs and small businesses, enabling people in underserved regions to participate in the digital economy. The Minister’s remarks on improvements in internet infrastructure are equally encouraging. The arrival of three submarine internet cables, the expansion of optical fiber networks through the Universal Service Fund and the increase in fiber broadband coverage indicate progress towards strengthening the country’s digital backbone. The reported reduction in the gender gap in mobile internet usage is another positive development, although sustained efforts are needed to ensure that women and other underserved groups can benefit equally. The rollout of 5G services has also opened new possibilities for faster connectivity, technological innovation and investment. However, the success of these initiatives will depend on their effective implementation, affordability and nationwide reach. Faster internet in major cities alone cannot fulfil the promise of digital transformation. The government must ensure that the timelines announced for the satellite internet framework and other connectivity projects are met. Regulatory clarity, fair competition and an investment-friendly environment will be essential to attract service providers and encourage technological advancement.
