Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani on Monday referred the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) (Amendment) Bill, 2022, to the relevant standing committee for debate in order to reach a consensual decision on the matter. The amendment bill was presented by PTI Senator Fauzia Arshad.

The National Assembly had enacted the Transgender Persons (Protection of Right) Act in 2018 to provide legal recognition to transgender persons and ensure that discrimination against transgender persons in various walks of life shall be punishable. The Senate started its session at the Parliament House in Islamabad on Monday afternoon with Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani in the chair. Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazir Tarar has urged the lawmakers to bring clarity over a bill relating to transgender persons in light of Islamic injunctions and provisions of the Constitution. He said this while responding to “The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) (Amendment) Bill, 2022” moved by Fawzia Arshad.

The Law Minister said it is a sensitive matter and we should take a decision in light of the Shariah and the Constitution. Besides, the Chair also referred “The Emigration (Amendment) Bill, 2022”, “The Al-Ala University Bill, 2022”, “The Federal Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2022” “The Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2022” and “The Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021” to the standing committees concern.

The House also passed two bills. These include “The Chairman and Speaker (Salaries, Allowances and Privileges) (Amendment) Bill, 2022”and “[The Access to the Media (Deaf) Persons Bill, 2022”. The Senate approved consideration of “The Dyslexia Special Measures Bill, 2020”, in a joint sitting of the House. The incumbent coalition government believes in supremacy of law and the Constitution and will not resort to using negative tactics of coercion and intimidation to suppress dissent. However, is someone attack on capital with mob, challenge rite of the government, then law will prevail and appropriate steps would be taken, said Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazir Tarar while speaking in the Senate here on Monday. The Law and Justice Azam Nazir Tarar was responding to a motion moved by Leader of the Opposition Shahzad Waseem and others regarding FIA’s raid on PTI leader Saifullah Khan Nyazee and other matters.
