Besiege of El Fasher sparks fears of war crimes, massacre by RSF
The recent besiege of El Fasher city in the western region of Darfur has sparked fears of yet another spell of war crimes by the rebel militia Rapid Support Force (RSF) that has been waging war against the Sudan armed forces since April 2023. The Sudanese army however is marching victoriously, taking back one city after the other and forcing the rebels to retreat and confine themselves to the western part of the country.
Ambassador of Sudan to Pakistan, Salih Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed Siddig while addressing a press conference at his office claimed the rebel militia was on the retreat and the situation was under the control of the Sudanese government. The recent misadventure by the RSF in El Fasher in the Darfur region will also end soon and the loyal forces of the government of Sudan will reclaim the important city in the west of Sudan, he said.
While addressing the senior media persons the ambassador drew the attention of the international community towards the blatant violations committed by the RSF men inflicting death, starvation and fear on the civilians living under their occupation.
He called upon the UN and the world to declare the RSF a terrorist organization and step in to help the country rid of them. The Sudan government welcomes any mediatory effort to end this war that has devastated people’s lives for over two years, he said.
He accused the RSF group of committing atrocities in their besieged areas. “We are witnessing the worst forms of human rights violations and unfortunately, the world is not vocal in condemnation of the RSF as it should have been,” said the Sudanese ambassador. El Fasher’s besiege has led to the intensified fight and no one but the civilian population is the main casualty of this fighting, he said. To a question, the Sudanese ambassador said the RSF could claim on the only 20pc region (mostly the western part of the country the Darfur region) while the rest of 80pc is under the government forces’ control.
