RAWALPINDI – Update for Rawalpindi commuters, as their usual journey on Peshawar Road suddenly looks different. With underpass construction now underway, a major road closure pushed traffic onto alternative routes, leaving motorists to navigate diversions and brace for longer travel times.
The traffic disruption hits Rawalpindi as construction on two long-awaited underpasses along Peshawar Road officially gets underway, forcing motorists to adopt alternative routes and prepare for significantly longer journeys.
The construction, centred around Race Course Park and Charing Cross prompted Rawalpindi City Traffic Police to put an extensive diversion plan into effect. With the main road affected by the construction activity, more than 250 traffic officials have been deployed in three shifts to manage the flow of vehicles, guide motorists and respond to congestion at key diversion points.
Saddar-to-Peshawar Traffic Route
Motorists heading from Saddar towards Peshawar will no longer be able to follow their usual route. Traffic will be redirected at Abid Majeed Turn onto Abid Majeed Road. From there, drivers can continue towards Peshawar by taking the service road from MH Gate No. 5 to Sher Khan Chowk, before proceeding towards Qasim Market Chowk.
Those travelling from Saddar and Chungi No. 22 have also been advised to use Sher Khan Chowk, MH Gate No. 5 and Khattak Chowk to reach their destinations.
Motorists approaching Saddar from the Peshawar side will have to take a different path. Traffic can enter Saddar through Allahabad Turn, followed by Hali Road and the service road located opposite Rafi Mall.
Traffic Police warned commuters that the diversions could add 20 to 25 minutes to normal travel times while work on the two underpasses continues. Authorities urged motorists to plan their journeys accordingly, leave earlier than usual and make use of alternative roads wherever possible.
Drivers have also been instructed to maintain lane discipline, avoid double-lane driving and refrain from wrong parking, particularly around diversion points where congestion is expected to build up.
Traffic personnel deployed across the affected routes will assist motorists and regulate vehicle movement as construction progresses.
